@¡@Major Work Achievements
(1) Since 1984 Ms. Wee has been serving as a volunteer with the Handicaps Welfare Association (HWA), Singapore. As a member of HWAfs Organizing Committee in her early career, and now as president, she has actively worked with government bodies and private building developers to create awareness of the need for a barrier-free environment, particularly for walkways, housing, public telephone booths, tourist resorts, and transport facilities. Her activities to improve disabled personsf accessibility cover a wide scope; for instance, she organized volunteer teams to survey access of public facilities; worked with the Singapore Institute of Architects to revise the Code on Barrier-free Accessibility in Buildings; and prepared maps of barrier-free tourist resorts.
(2) She has promoted various rehabilitation programs, including the establishment of the HWA Rehabilitation Center (1993). Also, to encourage the disabled to participate in public activities, she launched transport and attendant care services and developed an independent living program.
(3) To improve the livelihood of the disabled and to develop their potential, she developed various services, including the loan of mobility devices, delivery of food rations, and subsidy schemes.
(4) Ms. Wee was born with deformed limbs; yet she studied computers while serving at a telecommunications company. As a swimmer, she has won many medals in international sports events. Her diligence and positive attitude toward life has continuously encouraged other disabled persons.
@¡@Future Activities
(1) By preparing guidelines for barrier-free facilities, she intends to improve access in schools, movie theaters, swimming pools, and other sports facilities. With the cooperation of persons with visual/ hearing impairments, she will work to build a barrier-free environment for all sorts of disabilities.
(2) By reinforcing cooperation with neighborhood countries, she will improve region-wide accessibility for the disabled.
(3) She intends to further expand programs of the HWA Rehabilitation Center and to develop the Centerfs links with hospitals to encourage their patients to continue with rehabilitation after leaving hospitals.
