GracelandElvis in 2002 - Find Out What's Happening!
TWENTY-FIVE YEARS LATER, ELVIS IS STILL EVERYWHERE
With a recent spot on Billboard's Top Ten, a major presence in an upcoming animated Disney feature, a comprehensive "Elvis #1s" release from RCA Records/BMG and more, the King of Rock & Roll continues to entertain with a career reaching new generations. Elvis Week 2002
promises to be huge this year, with special Elvis: The 25th Anniversary Concert featuring an appearance by Priscilla Presley and Lisa Marie Presley.
Elvis Presley, 42, died on August 16, 1977, having completed 23 years in show business. To some it is amazing that, twenty-five years later, his star shines more brightly than ever and his posthumous career, now longer than the one he enjoyed in life, rivals that of many successful entertainers working today. His recordings, movies and concert films, his influence and his mystique continue to reach new audiences and inspire new generations of performers, while the fans he had in life remain steadfast. His tremendous presence in the collective consciousness of the world is immeasurable. Elvis Presley's legacy is enshrined in the Rock and Roll, Country Music and Gospel Music halls of fame, making him the only performer, thus far, to be inducted into all three.
The 25th anniversary year brings a host of major Elvis-related projects and a heightened awareness of the superstar in mainstream popular culture. The special three-song CD Elvis, America the Beautiful, released by RCA Records/BMG as a fund-raiser for disaster
relief in New York, continued its reign in the top ten on Billboard magazine's top-selling singles chart as fans gathered in Memphis to commemorate the legendary entertainer's birthday on January 8th. Thus began a year full of major Elvis-related projects, many of them directly tied in with 25th anniversary observances.
In February, officially beginning a close new cross-promotional association with Graceland/EPE, America Online (AOL) launched exciting new Elvis content.
The unveiling of Action Performance's new EPE-licensed racing program with three new Elvis 25th anniversary-theme cars, with NASCAR's Rusty Wallace, NHRA champion John Force and Larry Dixon was held on March 1 in Las Vegas.
With this year's Grammy Awards, Elvis' original 1956 recording of Don't Be Cruel became his fifth record to be honored
with a Grammy Hall of Fame induction. Also this month, the Sincerely Elvis museum, an ever-changing exhibit area in the Graceland visitor center, debuts a new exhibition documenting and celebrating Elvis Presley's greatest love affair, his enduring relationship with his fans.
In April, Vaughn-Bassett Furniture Company will present two Elvis-inspired bedroom suites to furniture dealers, thus launching their new Elvis Presley Collection. On April 27, the Gumball 3000 Rally, a coast-to-coast road race with many mainstream celebrity drivers, will have a "pit stop" at Graceland, with the cars making a loop on the Graceland Mansion driveway. On June 7, Graceland will celebrate its 20th anniversary of being open for public tours. Later that month, Graceland's special events facilities will be the location for the DeLorean Car Show & Convention.
On June 21 Disney's Lilo & Stitch will open in theaters nationwide. The film is expected to join the list of the company's all-time animated family classics. Elvis is a major theme throughout the storyline, and a lively soundtrack featuring six original Elvis Presley recordings will grace music stores everywhere. The grand premiere will take place at the historic El Capitan Theater in Hollywood. Next door to the famous theater will be a six-week special exhibit about the film, which will include a significant collection of Elvis artifacts on loan from Graceland. With The Walt Disney Company's full-out marketing efforts for the film, Elvis Presley's already tremendous reach into new generations will get a significant boost. (The Elvis recordings on the soundtrack are: Hound Dog, Devil in Disguise, Burning Love, I'm Coming Home, Stuck on You and Heartbreak Hotel.)
Soon RCA Records/BMG, the singer's record label, will announce its plans for a special Fall release of Elvis #1s, which features 30 of the legendary singer's #1 hits, culled from throughout his career. Presently, RCA Records and BMG Heritage are proud to announce, in commemoration of the important 25th anniversary milestone, the July 9th release of Elvis: Today, Tomorrow & Forever - a unique 4 CD/CS anthology that consists of 100 unreleased tracks by the King of Rock &' Roll. Elvis: Today, Tomorrow & Forever follows Elvis' career chronologically with rarities from nearly all his studio recording sessions plus several historic live highlights.
Summer will bring the publication and international distribution of two significant new Elvis books created with special access to the Graceland archives. Villard Books presents The Elvis Treasures, which explores Elvis' professional and personal life through a collection of removable exact facsimiles of archival documents along with an audio CD of Elvis interviews through the years.
The primary worldwide focus of the 25th anniversary year will be at Graceland during Elvis Week, August 10 - 18, when tens of thousands of people will visit Memphis to celebrate Elvis' life and participate in dozens of commemorative events. The week starts with a parade and special entertainment in downtown Memphis in an event entitled An Elvis Happening on Beale Street - Memphis Welcomes the Fans (August 10).
All of this is joined by unique 25th anniversary merchandising and licensing programs, special publications, documentaries, radio promotions, worldwide media coverage, an ever-growing web presence of the official Elvis.com web site, and more.
The news area of Elvis.com will carry detailed updates as about all the projects mentioned herein, and many more, as they evolve.

Elvis Is Everywhere Through Exhibit Loans from Graceland
All through the years, Graceland/EPE has received requests from museums around the world for Elvis artifact loans. We try to cooperate whenever possible as a professional courtesy and, mainly, to help further the Elvis phenomenon, keeping him in the public eye in a good way. These exhibitions are typically about a larger theme that the Elvis legacy is a part of. It's no surprise that we receive so many requests. Elvis'life and legacy touch on so many themes of history and popular culture - music, film, fashion, military service, Southern culture, American culture in general, the history of cities he performed or filmed in, and on and on and on. Whatever the theme, if it's positive and if the organization is reputable (including being set up for the standards of proper archival care), we want to be sure that Elvis is represented.
This year, it seems that more than ever we have items out on loan. We thought you would be interested in knowing about this and, if one of these exhibits is near you, that you might enjoy going to see it. Luckily, the archival collection at Graceland is so large that we can make these periodic loans from our archival storage facility without diminishing the extensive exhibits on the Graceland tour.
Here are the current exhibit loans:
Venue: El Capitan Theatre - Hollywood, California
Venue: American Textile Museum - Lowell, Massachusetts
Venue: Orange County Regional History Center - Orlando, Florida
Venue: Experience Music Project - Seattle,Washington

BMG Spearheads Unprecedented Multi-Platform Worldwide Elvis Presley Campaign With Elvis Presley Enterprises
RCA Records Headlines Celebration with Release of ELV1S 30 #1 Hits
New York, NY - March 26, 2002 - BMG, the global music division of Bertelsmann AG and owner of RCA Records, will mark the 25th anniversary year of Elvis Presley's death with an unprecedented multi-platform marketing and promotion campaign and the October release of RCA's ELV1S 30 #1 Hits, it was announced today by Rolf Schmidt-Holtz, the company's Chairman and CEO.
The campaign, which is being conducted with the full participation of Elvis Presley Enterprises, Inc. (EPE), will span the globe and every medium to include cross- marketing alliances with a world-class roster of integrated marketing partners including Bertelsmann's Gruner + Jahr and Random House, as well as AOL, Lycos and NASCAR, among many others. In addition, RCA and EPE have licensed six songs for Disney's upcoming animated film, "Lilo & Stitch." In the coming months, a number of strategic alliances will be announced with a "who's who" of leading worldwide brands in the automotive, sports, credit card, apparel, retail, food and beverage sectors.
"BMG is poised to play a lead role in this year's celebration of an artist who is not only an icon around the world but whose achievement is the benchmark by which artistic success is measured," said Schmidt-Holtz. "Our goal is to lead the charge in reintroducing Elvis and his music to a new generation of music fans."
Presley's musical contributions are unsurpassed: He holds the record for most top 10 Pop singles (40) and the most gold and platinum awards, with 132 different albums and singles reaching gold, platinum or multiplatinum status. He is the world's best selling artist, having sold more than one billion albums and singles worldwide. His popularity remains intact to this day with worldwide sales of close to 50 million units for the last decade alone, making Presley among the top 40 best-selling artists for the same period.
In addition to RCA's ELV1S 30 #1 Hits, which will for the first time assemble Elvis Presley's 30 No. 1 hits on one disc, BMG Heritage will release a 4-CD box set, available in July, which will feature more than 100 as-yet unreleased versions of Presley classics.
"Elvis Presley left an indelible mark on our culture and a musical legacy that is second to none," said Bob Jamieson, Chairman, RCA Music Group. "The release of ELV1S 30 #1 Hits is a testament to the profound influence he has had on several generations of artists and the hold he continues to have on the imaginations of music lovers everywhere."
Bertelsmann's Random House, the world's largest trade book publisher, will release three Elvis Presley titles during the second quarter of this year: The Elvis Treasures (Villard), a photographic coffee table biography; Girl's Guide to Elvis (Broadway Books), an overview of Presley's career and romantic relationships; and Lilo & Stitch (Random House Children's Books), a children's book companion to the animated Disney film of the same name. In July, Bertelsmann's Gruner & Jahr, the world's second largest magazine company, will release a book-a-zine featuring rare interviews and photos of Presley.
Other Bertelsmann companies participating in the company-wide Elvis Presley marketing campaign include the Direct Group, the world's largest direct-to-consumer operation and RTL Group, Europe's number one television and radio network. A rundown of the 25th Anniversary campaign along with musical content will be featured started this spring on BMG's official Elvis Web site www.elvisnumberones.com, which will link to the Official Elvis Web site (EPE) www.elvis.com.

"ELVIS FOREVER", PBS TV Special (90 minutes)
Aired on Thu., Mar. 7, 10:00PM (Don't miss the re-run)
August 16, 2002, marks the 25th anniversary of the death of the most celebrated entertainer of the 20th century. Elvis Presley's popularity is unrivalled in the history of show business, and he continues to attract millions of new fans each year. But why Elvis? ELVIS FOREVER revels in the magic of Elvis Aron Presley and reveals the man behind the myth as never before, using rare performance clips, home movies and exclusive interviews with those closest to the man who will always be king. ELVIS FOREVER airs on PBS as part of the March 2002 pledge drive.
"The Early Years" segment of ELVIS FOREVER covers the years from Presley's humble beginnings in Tupelo, Mississippi, to his meteoric rise to fame in the 1950s with his first Sun recordings, his early television appearances and his first films, including Love Me Tender and Jailhouse Rock ? even a rare, tantalizing glimpse of Elvis' color screen test. This extraordinary segment concludes with a seldom-seen, full-length hit song from his classic live television days.
"The Hollywood Years" illuminates the Army and Hollywood periods, with never-before-seen color home movies of Elvis in uniform, plus memorable musical moments from such Presley favorites as G.I. Blues, Blue Hawaii and Fun in Acapulco, as well as rarely seen newsreel footage of Elvis and Priscilla's 1967 wedding. This entertaining and engrossing section ends with Elvis singing the theme to perhaps his most enjoyable film, Viva Las Vegas.
"The Vegas Years" takes a look at Elvis' later films, including The Trouble With Girls and Change of Habit, and, through rare, color footage from a private collection, sheds light on his career-changing switch from glamorous movie star to electrifying entertainer whose emotionally charged performances in Las Vegas and all across America are legendary. The show concludes with Elvis' stirring (and show-stopping) rendition of "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" from "Elvis on Tour."
In between these rare clips, each segment features exclusive, first-time revelations from some of Elvis' friends, lovers, co-stars and colleagues, including Dick Clark, Glen Campbell, Kenny Rogers, Bill Medley, Connie Stevens, Teri Garr, Tab Hunter, Patti Page, James Darren, Jackie De Shannon and Mac Davis, plus some of Elvis' closest associates, including road manager and best friend Joe Esposito, Sun Records founder Sam Phillips, longtime friend George Klein, and Jordanaires singer Gordon Stoker, among many others interviewed over the last 10 months.
