Susan Henning Interview Q : When did you first meet Elvis? A : I first met Elvis in, probably 67. And I was topless and the bottom half of me was a mermaid. And it was on the set of one of the films, "Live A Little, Love A Little." Q : Did you get to talk to Elvis much on the set? A : They had to get me in position with a wheelchair because I couldn't walk with my tail fin. And I was in position and then Elvis had come onto the set and we waved to each other and we were introduced from a distance. And that was really our introduction. I was sort of incapacitated with my tail and wheeled about, and he had his own dressing room, and we didn't do much talking on the set. It was after the filming that we were introduced. Q : Do you recall your lines in the film? A : I remember my co-star besides Elvis was a big whale. And I remember I had a jelly doughnut and coffee, and he was trying to photograph me, and I was complaining. And this huge whale jumped up out of Marine World and ate my little jelly doughnut. So it was pretty much just a pain to him and the whale was a pain to me and not too much dialogue. Q : So when you finally were officially introduced to Elvis, can you tell us about that? A : Elvis number one man Joe came to the dressing room and knocked on the door and said, "Elvis would like to meet you." And I said, "Certainly, of course." And we were introduced, and he asked if we could take a ride at the particular Sea World where we were at they had a tall tower. And it went way up above and turned a 360 and you saw the ocean view. And the three of us, Joe and Elvis and myself, went up there. And we spun around in the tower and it was really wonderful. We talked and got to know each other. I think there was sparks that flew, and we both enjoyed each others personality and just enjoyed each other. So there had to be more to come after that. Q : Did you get to see him any more during the filming? A : I think that was it. Q : You were also in the 68 special. How did you get the part in the Bordello scene? A : The 68 special, that was the second time I saw Elvis. And I don't know that he knew I had just interviewed at NBC and got the part of the virgin girl of the night, to say it politely. At the time I guess hopefully I've maintained an element of naivete, but it was just another interview that NBC was looking for someone to play a dance scene with Elvis. And I wasn't really a dancer per se, but I guess I had the innocent look at the time. And I did the interview, and got it. And when I walked into the room we were to practice and rehearse the dance, he had his back to me. And he had his little macho pose, and I think I had a pair of short shorts on. And I thought, "Oh well, there's Elvis, we're gonna have fun." So I remember walking up and sticking my leg between his leg and kinda doin' a little can-can and his favorite slogan was, he looked down and went, "My boy, my boy." And we hugged and it was fun to see him again, it had been almost a year. Q : When Elvis first saw you at NBC, did he remember you right away? A : Well he first saw my leg. And then when he turned around, yeah. There was definitely a charisma when we were together up in that sky tower. In fact, when I met him, the first time, I was actually engaged to a wonderful man, he got the third place Mr. California. A very handsome, tall, dark and, and I remember I was attracted to Elvis and it really bothered me cause I thought, if I'm true to this man, and I remember telling my fiance, "There's a guy that I am interested in, I think maybe we should think what we're doing, because if I'm truly that infatuated with you, I shouldn't be looking at another man." I didn't tell him who it was. But definitely, there was the infatuation that budded at the movie and continued on. Q : How long a workday did you work with Elvis at that time? A : I think the bordello scene was probably just a couple days. I know I was there for most of the tapings, I know it wasn't when I was through. At that time I think I was a support system, I was down on the side and he'd smile and I liked to be with him on the off time. Q : Is there anything about shooting the special that stands out in your mind? A : People have said, "What did you think, was he really on drugs, all the stories." I feel very privileged that I think I got to know him at a time when I can honestly say, I met one of the most beautiful human beings, and when you say not fake, certainly he could perform, and when the cameras were rolling, he performed. But off stage, what a beautiful person, how honest, real, humble. How few men are humble like he was. And I think it was just a beautiful time in his life. There was no drugs. There was no nothing. It was just a man doing his job, looking for some fun when he was off camera. Q : So was there a little romance blooming? A : Oh sure. You know, he was, I think, I started the business when I was six, and at that time I met him I was probably 19 or 20. And having dated many of the stars of my era, going way back, Jimmy Caan when we were all budding. I wasn't enamored so much with who he was as who he was as a person. And I was so attracted to just his down home, it seemed like so many of the men of Hollywood were, either I was seen as just a body or a blonde, or a self-satisfying toy. I don't know the girls were not thought of too greatly then. And I think Elvis really looked through all that. I felt like he was looking into who we were, what did you like to do, what were your interests. And I think he was searching too. And, there was a real, I think wholesome connection. And certainly a physical attraction. Q : What do you think Elvis was searching for? A : I thought about that, and I know at times we had talked about the Bible. And I think he knew there was something more. But I think when you're in the business, you're never quite satisfied with what it gives. There were times when I would cry that nobody loved me for anything but my body. And it was what I presented. And I think he had a restlessness of an inner peace. And he had so much to give, but I think he was looking for maybe a peace that God might have given him, and I do think he had the Lord in him. But I think it was difficult to find in the circumstances he was in. Q : How long did you see Elvis? A : I don't remember how long it was, we did the special, and then we did a couple trips together. At the time you are just who you are and you're dating and you don't really, so my time is sketchy. I think it was probably over a period of a year, maybe a year and a half. Q : What type of things did you and Elvis do, did he take you to the movies? A : No, no, I met him one time in Arizona we went, and I think a lot of his fun, since he was so much out was just to be in. And we would really just stay in the room, and that sounds all perverted, but I mean, you can have a lot of fun in the room besides doing what people might think. I mean, just talking and, he loved to get into deep thoughts of, and he loved to eat. And then there was a trip in Las Vegas, and I think one time it was with a group of guys, and we all sat around, it was in a couch and there was a table, and they had the guitars and it was just bashing. And that was just fun. I think he loved fellowship, he loved to be the center of attention. But he loved to be surrounded by friends or people that he enjoyed. Q : Did Elvis tell you about any plans that he had for going on the road or anything? A : Well I knew he was gonna start Vegas. And when he started that is when our relationship, I did go on to get married, he went on his way and I went mine. So I met him, I feel at a beautiful time when he was just a precious person, and what he did after, I really don't have knowledge of. Q : Did Elvis show a keen interest in you and your career? How would you encapsulate your relationship with Elvis? A : I think he enjoyed times when he wasn't on stage, and so often if he was in the public, he was on stage. So the private times were the times he could let down. One of my greatest fun times was to comb his hair, and do it in different ways that he had never worn it. And he thought that was so funny that I would comb his hair in bangs, or part it down the center like a butler, or, we just played with each other. You could do fun things, you could have deep talks with him, he was very articulate. And certainly we talked about the future, I think we had different goals for each of our futures. I don't think we would have been harmonious. I had been 19 years in show biz, and I was ready to phase out, and he was definitely committing and going deeper. And, that's opposite. Q : Was that really the reason why you stopped seeing each other? A : No. I think he had a multitude of women and I think I was one of, I don't know, one of many probably. But there's a lot of wonderful women out there, and later he found different women. But I think both of us enjoyed our time and we both sort of mutually went two different ways. Q : When was the last time you saw Elvis? A : I think it was in Las Vegas. It was right when he was really, cause it was right after that that so many photos came out with him in his white suit. And I was not in that era. I was right before that. Q : Why do you think Elvis is so loved, especially after all these years? A : Because he wasn't the average, he was so above the normal person. I think he was intelligent. I think his humility, but look at his voice. The tremendous range, his musical abilities. He was gorgeous. He was just gorgeous. And he, I mean some men have good looking, some have good personalities, he had it all. I don't know anything that Elvis didn't have. Q : Is there any particular thing you'd like people to know about Elvis? A : I was very surprised, he used to love to recite the Lord's Prayer. And I was a Christian in my early childhood days, Mom said we had a Bible on our dining room table, or on our living room table. And she said more or less were Christians. And I didn't really know, and I think Elvis was one of the little budding seeds in when we would have our spiritual talks. But I had no clue that an actor would have a love for God or even want to talk about the Bible. That was a surprise, a very pleasant surprise, and he had a part in turning my life around. Q : Do you have one particular special moment about Elvis that you treasure? A : Hmm. I think the particularly precious moments are precious cause you don't say them. And certainly there are some very special moments. Q : Any you can say? A : I loved when I could get my way. Sometimes he'd have things that he'd say, I don't do that. And I said, "Well, I can't do it if I don't do it." And then I play my games. It was fun to have him be respectful. Q : In those outtakes, you can see the connection between you and Elvis. A : Yeah, now that, there was definitely, it was just the right time at the right place, we both were looking for each other and found each other. Q : That was great. Thank you. Coming Soon! エルヴィスがセットに現れ、 離れたところから お互い手を振って 挨拶したのが 全ての始まりでした。 私は尾ひれと 車椅子のため 身動きがとれないし、 エルヴィスは ドレシング・ルームに帰ったので、 セットでは 話すことが出来ませんでした。 撮影の後に 紹介されたのです。 Q : 映画の中の あなたのセリフを覚えてますか？ A : 私の共演者はエルヴィスと 大きなクジラだったのです。 確か 私は ドーナツとコーヒーを持っていて、 エルヴィスが私を写真に撮ろうとする。 私が不平を言ってる時に、 マリン・ワールドのクジラがジャンプして ドーナツを食べるのです。 全く彼にとってもイヤな場面で、 私はクジラがイヤだったし、 セリフはほとんどありませんでした。 Q : 正式にエルヴィスに紹介された時のことを 話して戴けますか？ A : エルヴィスの側近のジョーが ドレシング・ルームにやって来て、 エルヴィスが私に会いたがってる と言ったのです。 私はもちろん承諾しました。 そして紹介されて、 シー・ワールドの乗り物に乗らないかと 誘ってきました。 高いタワーがあって、 その展望台は360度の眺望で、 海まで見渡せることができました。 そのタワーに ジョー、エルヴィスと 私の３人が上がって、 展望台で一回りして、 それは素晴らしかったのです。 おしゃべりをして、 お互いを理解できました。 その時 ビビッと来たと思う。 お互いに気が合ったので、 ２人の関係は このままでは終わらないと 思いました。 Q : その他にも 撮影中に彼と会いましたか？ A : それだけです。 Q : 「68 カムバック・スペシャル」にも あなたは出演されてます。 売春宿のあの役は どのようにして得られましたか？ A : エルヴィスに再会したのが 「68 カムバック・スペシャル」でした。 彼が知っていたかどうか わかりませんが、 私はＮＢＣの面接で、 丁寧に言えば、 その夜のバージン・ガール の役を貰いました。 あの頃の私には ナイーブな要素があったのでしょう。 ＮＢＣは エルヴィスのダンス・シーンの共演者を 捜してたのです。 私は いわゆる ダンサーじゃなかったのですが、 あの頃は 少女の面影を残していて、 面接で、あの役を得たのです。 そして、 リハーサル室に入っていくと、 エルヴィスはマッチョ・ポーズで 背を向けて立っていて、 私はその時 ホット・パンツ姿で、「あっ エルヴィスがいる。 ちょっと からかってやろう」と思って、 背後からエルヴィスに近づき、 彼の足の間に私の足を入れて、 軽く蹴り上げてみせたの。 すると 彼は振りかえって、 口癖の「マイ・ボーイ、マイ・ボーイ（驚いた）」って。 そして ２人はハグして、 １年ぶりの再会を喜びました。 Q : ＮＢＣで再会した時、 すぐにエルヴィスは あなただと分りましたか？ A : 彼は最初に私の足を見て、 そして振りかえって 「ヤー」っと。 あのスカイ・タワーに上がった時から はっきりとカリスマを感じてました。 でも本当のところ、 エルヴィスに初めて会った時、 私は素晴らしい男性と 婚約してたのです。 ミスター・カリフォルニア第３位で、 ハンサムで、 背が高くて、 精悍でした。 私はエルヴィスも好きになって、 悩みました。 私はこの男性に 不誠実じゃないかと。 それで、 フィアンセに告白したのです。 「興味ある男性がいるの。 私たち これからのこと 考えなくちゃいけないわね。 もし あなたのことが本当に好きなら、 他の人に 目をそらしたりしてちゃいけないし」って。 エルヴィスの名は 明かしませんでした。 でも、明らかに 映画をやってる間に 夢中になってしまい、 ほとんどいません。 彼の生涯の中でも 美しい時だったのです。 ドラックもなかったし、 バカなことも しませんでした。 それこそ 仕事を頑張り、 オフの時は 遊びを追求する男だったのです。 Q : ロマンスの花は咲きましたか？ A : 決まってるでしょう。 彼のことよ。 私は６才から芸能界にいました。 そして エルヴィスに会ったのは 19か20才の頃でした。 同年代の沢山のスターと デイトしたことがあります。 ジェームス・カーンとは 私たちがまだ若かった頃でした。 私は名前に惹かれたりはしません。 その人柄です。 彼の場合は 南部っぽさに惹かれたのです。 多くのハリウッドの男性にとって、 私はただのボディか、 ブロンドか、 大人の玩具としてしか 見られてなかったのです。 あの頃、 女性は 偉大に考えられてなかったのかも知れません。 しかし エルヴィスは もっと深く考えていました。 彼はその人物が誰なのか見ていました。 何が目的か、 何に興味を持ってるかとか。 彼自身のことも 追求してたように思います。 本物でした。 健全な関係でした。 そして、もちろん 肉体的魅力に惹かれました。 Q : 彼は何を探求してたと思いますか？ A : そのことを考えました。 度々、私たちは 聖書について話しました。 彼は詳しく知ってました。 しかし、 この仕事をしていると、 現状に満足するようなことは ありません。 私は 誰も私のボディ以外に興味がないと よく泣いたものです。 しかし、 私にはそれしかなかったのです。 エルヴィスは心の奥に 不安を抱えていたと思います。 彼は人々に 多くの物を与えてきたけど、 彼自身は たぶん 神から与えられる 心の平和を求めていたのでしょう。 彼の中に神がいたとも思えます。 でも、 あのような境遇では エルヴィスは彼の道を、 私は私の道を進みました。 私は 彼が愛すべき人間であった美しい時に 彼と出会ったのです。 それ以後のことは知りません。 Q : エルヴィスはあなたや あなたの仕事に 興味を示さなかったのですか？ エルヴィスとの関係とは どういうものだったのでしょうか？ A : エルヴィスは ステージに出ない時は 遊んでました。 たびたび 公衆の前に出てるといっても、 それは ステージに立ってるということで、 プライベートな時間は 心を癒すために 必要だったのです。 特に楽しかった思い出は、 彼の髪をクシでといた時です。 それまでしたことの無い 色んな髪形にしました。 前髪を下ろしたり、 執事みたいに真中分けにしたり、 お互いにやりっこしました。 遊びもしたし、 真剣なおしゃべりもしました。 彼って雄弁なのです。 将来のことも話しました。 だけど 私たちは 将来の目標が違ってたのです。 うまくやって行けるとは 思えなかったのです。 私は芸能界に１９年もいて、 仕事を減らすつもりでした。 しかし彼は 明かに仕事を増やして行ってました。 全く逆だったのです。 Q : それが 彼と別れた本当の理由なのですか？ A : いいえ。 彼にはいっぱい女性がいて、 私はたぶん その中の１人にすぎなかったのです。 しかし 素敵な女性がたくさんいたし、 その後も 違う女性たちを見つけてたでしょ。 でも、 私たちは お互いに楽しい思いをして、 別々の道を進んだのです。 Q : 最後にエルヴィスに会ったのは いつでしたか？ A : ラスベガスでした。 すぐ後から 彼のジャンプスーツ姿の写真が 多く出てきたので、 私はあの時代にはいなかったので、 その少し前ってことでしょうね。 Q : エルヴィスはどうして いつまでも愛されるのしょうか？ A : 彼は平均的じゃないからです。 彼は普通の人間よりずっと上です。 彼は知性的でしたし、 謙虚でした。 しかし、あの声ですよ。 音域の広さ。 音楽的才能。 それに 彼はゴージャスでした。 ゴージャスのひとことね。 ハンサムな男もいるし、 性格の良い男もいるけど、 彼は全てを備えていました。 彼に無いものはなかったでしょう。 Q : エルヴィスについて 人々に知らせたいことがありますか？ A : 驚いたのは、 彼はよく 聖書の「主の祈り」を 暗誦したことです。 私は子供の頃から キリスト教徒で、 ダイニング・テーブルにも、 リビングのテーブルにも 聖書が置かれていました。 母の話は 多かれ少なかれ キリスト教徒に関する話でした。 よく分らなかったのですが、 エルヴィスとスピリチャルな話をしたことが ひとつの芽になりました。 俳優で 神に愛情を抱いたり、 聖書の話をしたがる人がいるなんて 考えもしませんでしたので、 驚きました。 心地よい驚きでした。 そして 彼が 私の人生を変える きっかけのひとつになったのです。 Q : あなたが お宝にしているエルヴィスの 特別な思い出は何でしょうか？ A : ふふ。 特別な思い出って、 人に話さないから特別なのですよ。 非常に特別な思い出が いくつかあります。 Q : 話せるものはありませんか？ A : 私のやり方を通せた時は 楽しかったです。 時々 彼の言うことを断わりました。 「私がやらない事は、 出来ない事なの」って言って、 自分のゲームが出来ました。 彼が大事にしてくれたので、 楽しかったのです。 Q : あの映像を見れば、 エルヴィスとあなたの関係は明かですよ。 A : そうだったかもね。 まさに最高の時に、 最高の場所に居たってことなの。 私たちは お互いに探し求めていたものを見つけたのです。 Q : Richard Davis Interview Q : Tell me some memories about Las Vegas. A : There's so many things it's hard to pinpoint. Well I got one thing. I don't remember what year it was. And one thing that happened is back in the dressing room before he went on one night and somebody came back and told him, said, "Muhammad Ali is in the audience and he would like to meet you." And Elvis said, "Oh, yeah, yeah, bring him on back," 'cause Elvis loved Muhammad Ali. So Muhammad Ali comes back there and he's got his entourage with him and-- big old guys, man. You know, and big bodyguard guys. Go, "Whoah," you know. They all walk in the dressin' room and here's a little skinny guy sittin' around. So Elvis and Muhammad Ali sittin' at the table and we had a big round table in the middle of the room, party room. And so they sittin' there talkin'. Well we're all away from the table and we kinda starin' across the room at each other, Elvis' bodyguards and Muhammad's bodyguards. We talkin' every now and then to each other tryin' to be friendly. And so apparently they got into a conversation of boxing and karate, 'cause Elvis loved karate, as you know. He was into it very deeply and he was an eighth degree black belt. And so they got into talkin' into that apparently and so all of a sudden Elvis stands up and Muhammad Ali stands up. And we were all lookin' like, "What is going on?" And so Elvis goes into a karate stance. Muhammad Ali goes into a boxing stance. And next thing we know, Muhammad Ali is on the floor, on his butt. We're looking like, "Uh oh. We gonna have to fight our way outta here apparently." Well what happened was Elvis was comparing karate to Muhammad Ali as far as what was the best, and Muhammad Ali took a stance and Elvis just swept his feet out from under him with one leg. It happened that fast. And then, but Muhammad Ali sittin' on the floor looked at Elvis and start laughin' and Elvis start laughin', so we all start laughin'. We say, "Whew, thank God we ain't gotta fight to get outta here" 'cause these are big guys, right? But anyway, that was one of the funny things that happened. And Elvis gave him a robe for his fight before he went on before his championship fight, a nice beautiful robe. I think it was a white and green robe. But they became very good friends. And-- but there was a lotta things that happened. I can't remember all of 'em, you know." Q : How was it touring with Elvis? A : Never a dull moment. Touring with Elvis was fantastic. I mean the one nighters were great. They got very tiring and when you're on the road all the time it gets old, it gets tiring. Playin' Vegas was great. We were there a month and then we'd be off a month or so, and then we'd come back a month. And Vegas, I liked Vegas more'n, I did the one nighters I think. The one nighters would really wear you out-- and I think any entertainer would tell you that. Q : What was your capacity when you were working for Elvis on the road? A : When I first started with Elvis in 1962 my capacity was basically a gofer, I guess you'd say. But I became his wardrobe manager, which means that I bought all of his clothes for him, his personal clothes, wardrobe, or had 'em custom made for him or whatever. And I was one of his bodyguards and I was his movie stand-in in 23 movies. So I had my hands full right there. Q : You helped design some clothes with Elvis, didn't you? A : I did help design a lot of his personal-- not his stage outfits, which were done by Bill Belew, but his personal suits. I designed some of them, had 'em special made by a custom tailor in Beverly Hills, California and I don't know if he's still in business now. Barry Serto is his name. Q : You used to go get some of them at Beau Gentry's, what was it? A : Well I used to buy a lot of his clothes at Beau Gentry's, Fred Segal's. I used to have a lot of his shirts, custom shirts, sport shirts made at National Shirt Shop, which is on Sunset Boulevard. Sy Devore(pic). That's some of the shops that come off-- you know, come top of mind. Q : How did you and the rest of the guys handle death threats and things to Elvis? A : The death threats. They were pretty scary. We didn't have that many of 'em per se, but the ones that we did have were-- it got pretty scary, I mean 'cause you never knew-- there was a lotta nuts out there and you don't never know if one of 'em is really gonna follow through with it or is telling the truth or whatever. And it got pretty scary. I mean there was times we did call in the FBI and stuff and times we even had to call in dog sniffing bomb squad dogs, you know, to-- places to check out before we opened the auditorium up for the fans, before we started a concert. And it's stuff like that that gets pretty hectic and pretty hairy, but thank God none of it ever came about. Q : Elvis sometimes carried a Derringer in his boot, didn't he? A : He carried a Derringer in his boot. He carried two on his waist and one on his back, one behind his neck, I don't know. He carried a lotta guns, yeah. Q : Why do you think he was so armed, Richard? A : In case I got outta line he had something to shoot me with. I don't know. Q : One for all the guys. A : I don't know, yeah. One for each one of us.

リチャード・デイヴィス・インタビュー Q : ラスベガスの思い出を話してください。 A : 多くのことがありすぎて、 正確には思い出せないが、 ひとつあります。 何年の出来事か 忘れましたが、 ある日の ショーが始まる前の楽屋に、 誰かがエルヴィスに伝えに 戻って来ました。 「モハメド・アリが客席に来ていて、 あなたに会いたがってます。」 エルヴィスはアリが好きだったから 「おお、そうか、そうか。 連れてこいよ」って。 それで、 モハメド・アリが来たんだ。 取り巻きたちも連れてきた。 奴らは大きなボディガードでさ、 余りにデカくて 「ワオ！」ってもんさ。 奴らが ドレッシング・ルームに入ってくると、 私みたいな痩せっぽちは 小さくなって座ってたよ。 そして、 大きな丸いテーブルが パーティー・ルームにあって、 そこで エルヴィスとモハメド・アリは 座って話したんだ。 我々は テーブルから離れた所で お互いをじろじろ見てた。 エルヴィスのボディーガードと モハメドのボディーガードがね。 でも、時々言葉を交わして 親しさを装ってたよ。 明かに エルヴィスとアリは カラテとボクシングの話を してるようだった。 エルヴィスはカラテが好きで、 のめり込んでいたからね。 彼は黒帯８段だったんだよ。 カラテの話をしてることは はっきり分ったよ。 そして突然、 エルヴィスが立ち上がると、 モハメド・アリも立ち上がった。 我々はみんな 「何が始まるんだ？」って。 そして、 エルヴィスがカラテの構えをとると、 アリもボクシングの構えをとった。 次の瞬間、 アリは床に尻もちを着いたんだ。 我々は「ワオ、 喧嘩が始まるぞ」って思ったよ。 真相は、 エルヴィスはアリと、 カラテと比べて、 どっちがベストかって話してたんだ。 そして アリが構えを取った時、 エルヴィスは片足でアリの足元を払った。 それは速かったんだ。 そして、 尻もちを着いたアリが エルヴィスを見上げて笑い出したので、 エルヴィスも笑い出し、 我々もみんな 笑い出したってワケさ。 「神様、喧嘩にならなくて感謝します」ってほっとしたよ。 何しろ 奴らはみんなデカかったからね。 とにかく 楽しかった思い出さ。 そして エルヴィスは、 次のチャンピオンシップ戦の前に 彼にガウンを贈った。 美しいガウンで、 白と緑のガウンだったはずだ。 彼らは友達になったよ。 他にも色んなことがあったが 思い出せないな。 Q : エルヴィスのツアーって どのようなものでしたか？ A : じっとしてるってことが無いんだ。 エルヴィスのツアーは素晴らしかったよ。 地方公演は最高ってことさ。 でも、退屈極まりないもので、 ツアーばかりやってると、 慣れてしまって、 退屈になってしまうんだ。 ベガス公演も最高さ。 ベガスで１ヶ月やって、 １ヶ月程休んで、 また戻って１ヶ月。 地方公演より ベガスの方が好きだったね。 地方公演は疲れるんだ。 他の歌手も 同じ事を言うだろうさ。 Q : エルヴィスの仕事において、 あなたは何の役割をしてましたか？ A : 1962年に エルヴィスの仕事を始めた頃は、 ただの使い走りだったんだ。 しかし、 彼の衣装係りになって、 彼に代わって 服を買い出しに行ったりした。 私服から、舞台衣装、 彼のために誂えたり、 いろいろさ。 ボディーガードでもあったし、 ２３本の映画で スタンド・インもやった。 だから 結構忙しかったんだ。 Q : エルヴィスの服のデザインも 手伝われましたね？ A : たくさんの服のデザインを手伝ったよ。 ステージ衣装は ビル・ビリューがしてたので、 私服だけだ。 私がデザインしたものを、 ビバリー・ヒルズの洋服店に 作らせてたんだ。 今でも仕事をしてるか知らないが、 バリー・サートという名前だよ。 Q : ボー・ジェントリーズにも よく行かれましたね？ A : 彼の服を買った店は ボー・ジェントリーズに フレッド・シーガルズだ。 シャツは、 誂えのシャツや スポーツ・シャツは サンセット大通りの ナショナル・シャツ・ショップさ。 サイ・デボア(写真)とか、 いま思い出すのは これぐらいだな。 Q : エルヴィスへの脅迫騒ぎの時、 あなた達はどのように 対処されましたか？ A : 脅迫事件は恐ろしかった。 何度もあったわけではないが、 あの時は恐ろしかったよ。 君は知らないだろうが、 世の中には たくさんの狂人がいるんだ。 脅迫状のとおり やってしまうヤツがいるかもしれないし、 イタズラとは限らないってことなんだ。 だから恐ろしいんだ。 FBIを呼んだことも度々さ。 爆薬探査犬を呼んだこともあったよ。 コンサート前に、 開場してファンが入る前に 調べさせたんだ。 大騒ぎになって、 ぞっとしたけど、 お蔭で何も起こらなかったよ。 Q : エルヴィスは時々 ブーツの中に デリンジャーを入れてましたね？ A : 彼はブーツにデリンジャーを１丁、 ウエストに２丁、 背中に１丁、 首の後ろにも１丁だよ。 何故だか知らないが、 沢山の拳銃を身に着けていたよ。 Q : エルヴィスは何故 あのように武装してたのでしょうか？ A : きっと、私が道を外した時に、 撃つつもりだったのさ。 Q : 全員が１丁ずつ？ A : まあ、そうだろうね、 我々１人１人に１丁ずつってことだったんだろう。
