ELVIS; That's The Way It Is
(Special Edition)

( Transcribed by C. Colclough )

Good morning, Hollywood camera.
Good morning.
Gentlemen, how are you?
"You Don't Have To Say You Love Me"
and "Bridge Over Troubled Water."
We don't need it. We can fake it.
So er, these are the same guys that I use all the time.
My rhythm group. you know.
So these are my... the backbone of my whole show.
As you can tell, we don't know these songs.
We haven't rehearsed them or anything...
We're just fooling around.
["That's All Right"]
Son of a bitch gave up, didn't it?
Lunch,
I need another pair of pants.

(You didn't?)
Bust the seat out of my pants, man.
["Little Sister"]
Son of a bitch!
It shocked the hell out of me, man.
We never did get it right on stage
Because we...
It was retarded.
And I wanted it quick.
"It's only words, words are all I have to steal your heart away, heart away."
I wanted the group to say "heart away,"...paw! Orchestra.
["Love Me"]
Are we in tempo?

Where's the director?
Oh, there he is, over there.
You want me to tell you when we're going to do that...er..
What do you call it?
"You Don't Have To Say You Love Me"
You want us to let you know. We're not going to do it now.
[After singing "20 Days 20 Nights"]
It worked.

Now, they tell you to ignore these cameras.
(Where's Gigi?)
Gigi is no longer with us.
(You've got to be kidding.)
No, he had to quit. See what happened, Gigi was married and had a baby, an infant baby. And he had a little boy back in Memphis. So he had to leave the little boy in Memphis, because his wife's parents were keeping the little boy and they wouldn't let him take him out of town. So, they had one child in California and one back there. They were traveling back and forth and it was a little too much for him.
(But if it was his child, can't he take his child with him?)
It's not really his child, it was his wife's child by a previous marriage.
(And she couldn't take him?)
She wouldn't take him away from them. It was just a family thing. He quit. I sure hated losing him.
(I know he hated to go, too.)
Hold it. OK. The horns are answering it here. "If you need a friend." It's right on top of "friend." really. They're right on top of "friend" They come in... "need a friend. If you need."
["Bridge Over Troubled Water"]

Charlie, I don't... Hold it, hold it.. Right, right. I don't like that harmony part when you.. when it switches there... that.. it sounds.. er.. yeah... When it switches it sounds like some guy that's just lost back there, which, you know, is the way it is, but we don't have to emphasise it.
(I made a mistake)
"Sail on silver girl." I wanna try something. This is the last verse.
We can do a yodel
"Mary In the Morning."
Mary at suppertime.
Kill that blower, or blow that killer, whatever.

James, wait a minute, man.
Wait a minute.
They don't tell you when to start.
Wah-ha ha ha ha ....
Like a big old screaming eagle out there, man.
You can't, you can't, you can't, you can't use those words, man.
They'll cut it right out. They'll cut it out.

They'll put an x-rating right across your big mouth, man. "Mouth" I said. That shows how you think.
I wouldn't say that. They'll cut that out. They won't leave it in.
You can't say "big ass" on this film.
Okay. "Mary in the Morning"
(You only got about another 45 minutes of sitting around. I know you've been great, but listen to this. That's the wildest laugh.)
That's about how I feel.

"Here's hoping you have a very successful opening and that you break both legs." Tom Jones.
"My god, my god, why hast thou forsaken me?" Signed, The Pope
"Best wishes for a continuing successful Vegas show, and I hope you get a raise in the next six months." Joe Esposito.
Don't pick your nose on camera, Elvis.
Don't pick your nose on camera, man.

It starts to get tense about this time.

I just hope I don't forget the words to...
"I Just Can't Help Believin"
I hope I don't forget the words.
["I Just Can't Help Believin'"]

(Right there, that's the first verse. You got the rest of it.)
If I get through the first one, I got it, got it made, man.
You should've seen me at dinner tonight.
I was going... in tempo. I never swallowed any of it. It was all right here. "Polk Salad Annie."
If the songs don't go over,
We can do, er, medley of costumes.
Has the show started yet? (Yes.)
Who's on?
(Sandy Supreme and the Shes)
Straight vodka, man,
It's good for you.
We could put the words of
"I Just Can't Help Believin'"
on that stool.
Well... That's it, you know, I just tapers off to nothing, man.
["I Got A Woman"]

I did a song about... I don't know, when I was a baby. You got to lean on your knee like this... like a fool.
It's a very tender love song. It's a ballad.
You get up into a girl's face, You know, very close. And you say, "YOU AIN'T.."
And it blows her hair straight back.

You know, when I first started in this business, I was a little bitty guy, little shaky leg going here. So Ed Sullivan saw me and said, "Son of a bitch."
Anyway, They put me on TV and filmed me from the waist up.
You know, I'm going.

Anyway, MGM is doing a movie here called "Elvis Loses his Excess," "Shakes his Excess Off" or whatever it is.
So don't let these cameras throw you.
Give me an E or a G, an F or a D, a B-flat minor plus one. I don't know what I'm talking about.
If you milk this thing long enough...
Put this in front of you, Ronnie, OK?

I made a movie about...
What are you laughing at?
This is my first guitar, I was little. I told you. Little bitty cat, trying to get people to listen to me.
"You all listen to me, I'm good, hot damn."
They said, "Not with that voice you ain't." Anyway...
"Toreadora Toreadore, who dat was wid you on the floor?"
Anyway my first movie ladies and gentlemen.
["Love Me Tender"]
That's really this guitar doing that.
Hang loose,
I'll be with you in a minute.
["Love Me Tender"]
Sorry I couldn't make it up there, man.
Everybody ready?
I'm not. I'm not. Okay.
["I Can't Stop Loving You"]

What you got, dear? God! Looks like...
Did you do that? It's very nice.
Looks like Engelbert Humperdinck. Okay.
Yeah sure will. Time-out, folks, just one second.
Bahija, Is that your name? Bahija.
OK, you want me to have this one?

(You like it?)
Thank you very much. Yes, nice, very nice. Thank you
I can't do that. I'm sorry.
Alright, Hang loose, you'll get it back. OK.
I just did a country and western album.
In it is a song,
It's called "Just Pretend."
Good Evening.
Just grab hold, honey, anywhere.
There you go.
Hi little girl. Hi.
Hello, what's the matter, baby?
(Please kiss(forgive?) me.)
(I love you.)
Okay, Sure, You want to get serious
or just play a little bit?
We start doing those,
We'll be up here all night.
["Don't Be Cruel"]
["Suspicious Minds"]
Where you going?
Thank you very much.
Fantastic audience.
Thank you very much.
( That's all. )

( Transcribed by C. Colclough )

Shoot that Hollywood camera.
["Next Step Is Love"]
Well Goddamn.
Huh? Oh I like that ending.
Yes Sir, that's nice.

"Can't Help Believing." I need the words.
I don't know the words, man. I think somebody ate 'em last night, man. Oh, here you go.
["I Just Can't Help Believin'"]
["I Just Can't Help Believin'"]
Do the instrumental. [piano solo]
Hit that big mother over there! Okay. One line.
["You Don't Have To Say You Love Me"]
No bar change on that?

"All your dreams are on their way". See how they shine. "See how they shine".
I think just the male voices.
(Oh) Just-er-see....
Wh...What are we doing it in, Charlie?
No, I mean are we doing it in unisons or...

(No, we're doing it in two part harmony.)
But it's pretty.. ("See how they shine..")
But I wanted it kind of strong, just that one line. You know. "Sail on silver girl..."
(From who? Les Brown... Les Brown, Whatever happened to him? He's still writin' songs.)
That's nice, very nice.
(Let me see that one, Elvis)
Hallelujia... Brother (Did you get the message?)
How much time we got?
(It's four after ten. It's a ..., before you go on stage, it's about roughly an hour. And I mean a rough hour)
A rough hour, boy. I just hope I don't forget the words to "I Just Can't Help Believin'". I hope I don't forget the words.
("Polk Salad Annie" will be no problem.)
This is the nitty-gritty time as far as being nervous, you know, opening night, man.
We don't have much time from there on out.
(Talking Where? What?)
Nah, at the end... at the end of "Can't Stop Loving You" when I start to do "Love Me Tender".
I have a new record, ladies and gentlemen. It just came out about ten years ago.
No, just came out about a week ago and it goes like this. How do you like it so far?
["I've Lost You"]
Anyway, MGM is doing a movie here.
So don't let these cameras throw you, and try not to throw the cameras.
So those of yous who have never seen me before will realize tonight that I am totally insane and have been for a number of years. They just haven't caught me yet.
No cord and no sound. Yeah there is. Uh, in nineteen fifty.. I made a..
It's cuttin' out, man. In nineteen fiftysix, I made my first movie. And ah..
Ah nineteen fiftysix.. You can't lose with four of these bastards. Ah..
Why they all tied up? Undo that one. just undo it. Aaaat a boy. Let's see. Hello, Hello. Goddamn, Hello. Son of a bitch. Hello, Here you go.
Two out of four ain't bad, really, you know.
I made my first movie..
I'm going to bring in the Supremes tomorrow night, you know.
with Mahalia Jackson singing lead with them.
Uh, and the title song to the movie went like this. That's how it went. Just right downhill, boy. Love, love. Okay.
Uh, B.J.Thomas has out a new record.
And I don't particularly like it.
But it's his own thing, you know.
You got the words to it? Okay.
Yeah, Okay. We got "The Wonder Of You" on the charts over there?
This is... All right, We'll get it.
Hey, Give me an A chord, man. Huummmmhh Hummmnn. See, I'm walkin' around getting my breath back is what I'm doing now.
Yeah can I borrow that? Ohhh.
Water? Yeah, like some.
Never finish the show, folks, but er.. Hey, the lights are on. I can see you. Hello out there. Hello. Here's to you, really... That's right.
Keep some music going back there.
Don't be afraid to play. Just play up. man. Just play the hell out of it. There you go.

You didn't think I'd make it, did ya?
I didn't either.
